Silver Doughnut Tower – How-To

We didn’t have a great experience communicating with the wedding cake vendors our venue limited us to, so we decided to scrap the whole cake thing. We figured a delicious finger food, like doughnuts, would be more likely to be eaten by guests anyway. And, inspired by images of Harry Potter movie dessert props, we figured we could use this as an opportunity to do something more fun (and save hundreds of dollars!). And so the idea of the silver, tiered, doughnut tower was born!

Silver Tower Construction

I love thrift stores, so I immediately started cruising various Value Village (second hand chain) locations for suitable silverware. I already knew that beautiful, silver-coated items are often found there with the household goods. I began amassing a collection of silver platters and silver goblets, in a variety of sizes.

The construction of the tiered tower was quite simple. It just consisted of intricate platters and cups/goblets stacked on top of each other. The pieces all had varying degrees of silver oxidation and intricacy, which just added to the whimsy. We glued them together with some craft glue we found at WalMart. I’m not sure what the name was, but it wasn’t really that ideal anyway. But the tower did hold together so there’s that haha. In the end the tower consisted of:

- 6 silver platters of varying sizes (some round, one oblong)
- 5 silver goblets (finding a teeny tiny one for the top tier was key!)
- 1 dumpy silver bowl to serve as the base (lifted the entire tower off the table)

Doughnuts

We pre-ordered a big batch of specialty doughnuts at a local shop. The shop agreed to deliver them to the venue, and our wedding planner took care of them once they arrived.

Final Masterpiece

The tower was revealed with the rest of the desserts (we opted for a dessert buffet so that guests would be free to fully explore the various offerings of the venue). It was a big hit and looked spectacular!!!
